For the New Year: Take Time to Make Time

by Andrea Feldman
Are you doing more and enjoying it less?
How long does it take to find something in your office?
Do you return e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner?
Is your home and/or workspace cluttered?

It’s time to stop and get organized!

“But I’m too busy to stop and get organized!”
As a professional organizer and time management consultant, I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that phrase. If you’re beginning to forget things or slip up, if your work area is cluttered, if you’re stressed or overwhelmed by what must get done in a day, it pays to take the time to get organized. Granted, it’s not easy to do, but improving how you use your space and time will help you work more effectively and feel better.  For many, the best time to get organized is now, while you’re doing your year-end wrap-ups and tax preparation.

“There just aren’t enough hours in a day.”
In some cases, I find that that my clients do need to hire help or outsource. More often, we discover that there are steps that can be taken to lighten their load; mainly by working smarter, not harder. It’s easy to fall into familiar ways of handling daily tasks. Taking a fresh look at where your energy is going and where you’d like it to go can breathe new life into a seemingly bursting schedule. How you organize your space and stuff can also make a great difference in freeing up more time.

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so you can do something about it now.”
Getting organized is a process. A task on your ‘to do’ list that isn’t scheduled is a job not likely to happen. The best way to get things done is to set a goal, identify the steps to take, write it into your schedule and keep your commitment. Taking the time to plan is essential to creating more time. Make time to do it now.
